When to renew
Look at section 4b on the front of your photocard — that's the date it expires. DVLA sends a reminder before then, but it's your responsibility to renew even if the letter doesn't arrive.

Who can renew online
You can renew online if you:
- live in Great Britain
- are not disqualified from driving
- haven't changed your name, title or signature
If your name has changed, renew by post. If your signature has changed, renew at a Post Office or by post. A valid UK passport lets DVLA use your passport photo.
Aged 70 and over
From 70 you renew every 3 years, for free. You'll be asked to confirm you meet the eyesight standard and to declare any medical conditions.
Questions
What happens if I don't renew my photocard?
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving with an out-of-date photocard. Your entitlement to drive isn't lost, but the card must be renewed.
Does a provisional licence need renewing?
Yes — provisional photocards also show an expiry date and need renewing every 10 years if you haven't passed by then.
I'm turning 70 — what changes?
You must renew your licence at 70 and then every 3 years. It is free, and DVLA sends a reminder 90 days before.
