Changing your address
Update your address online at GOV.UK. It's free and your new licence usually arrives within a week or so. You'll need your driving licence and your addresses for the last 3 years. You can also apply by post — also free.
Changing your name
Name changes are made by post and are free. Fill in form D1 (from most Post Offices) and send it with:
- your current photocard licence
- an original document showing your new name — for example a marriage or civil partnership certificate, decree absolute or deed poll
Why it matters
You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't tell DVLA when your address changes. Road safety letters, speeding notices and renewal reminders all go to the address on your licence.

Can I keep driving while my new licence is on its way?
Yes, you can keep driving while DVLA updates your licence.
Do I need to update my provisional licence when I move?
Yes. The same rules apply to provisional and full licences. You also need your current address on your licence when you go for your tests.
Does changing my licence address update my car's log book?
No. The vehicle log book (V5C) is separate — you need to update that too.
